History of development
In 1995, at the clinical bases of the neurological department of Sumy City Clinical Hospital No. 4, the neurosurgical department of Sumy Regional Clinical Hospital and the Sumy Regional Psychoneurological Dispensary, the section “Nervous Diseases, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry with Narcology, Medical Psychology” was created as part of the Department of “Propaedeutics of Internal Diseases” under the leadership of Dr. Med. Sci., Professor Ivan Rachynsky.
Kolenko Faina
The head of the section was a PhD Associate Professor, Kolenko Faina. The neurosurgery course was headed by PhD Associate Professor Potapov Oleksandr, and PhD Associate Professor Kustov Arkadiy headed the psychiatry course.
In 2005, the Department of Neurosurgery and Neurology was established with courses in psychiatry, narcology, medical psychology, skin and venereal diseases, occupational diseases, allergology and clinical immunology, headed by PhD Professor Oleksandr Potapov.
Potapov O. O. – graduated from Ivano-Frankivsk Medical Institute in 1985. Since 1986, he has worked as a neurosurgeon at the Sumy Regional Clinical Hospital. In 1992, he defended his PhD thesis on the topic “Craniocerebral trauma in patients with ischemic heart disease”. Since 1995, he has worked as an assistant, and later as an associate professor of the neurosurgery course. In 2002, he successfully defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences in the speciality “Neurosurgery”.
Kustov Arkadiy
The clinical facilities of the department are equipped with modern equipment. There are physiotherapy departments, laboratories, functional and ultrasound diagnostics rooms, X-ray rooms, etc. To ensure a high-quality educational process, the department uses modern computer technology. Educational and monitoring computer programs have been developed and implemented.
Over the years of the department’s existence, the staff has carried out powerful educational, pedagogical, educational, and medical-consultative work, continuing to improve the quality of training of interns and practising doctors in the Sumy region and Ukraine. Research activities are actively carried out, the main areas of which are the study of the leading pathogenetic and clinical features of traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular and mental diseases, and the study of the effect of professional factors of the technological process on human health.
Students participate in Olympiads in the academic disciplines of the department, demonstrating good knowledge, skills and practical skills. Many prize-winning places were taken at the All-Ukrainian Olympiads in different years. Under the guidance of the department staff, practising doctors of the city of Sumy and the region conduct scientific research and publish their results in leading scientific publications.
Since 1995, a student scientific society has been operating. Applicants show interest in current issues of neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, new methods of diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients, and conduct independent research work. Traditionally, at the final scientific conferences of the institute, they take prize places based on the results of their research. A large number of them have become famous neurologists, neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, and narcologists.
The department’s employees actively participate in the work of scientific forums, including international ones (congresses, plenums of scientific and practical societies, symposia of young scientists of Ukraine), in implementing national and international programs. Close relations are maintained with foreign colleagues and institutions.
The staff of the department is constantly engaged in intensive medical and advisory work, primarily in the University Clinic of Sumy State University, as well as in clinical bases of medical and preventive institutions, where they regularly carry out clinical rounds, emergency examinations, participate in consultations, pathological and anatomical conferences. Surgical interventions are performed for urgent and planned pathology of the central and peripheral nervous system congenital malformations of the CNS in children.
The Department of Neurosurgery and Neurology is a centre for training young specialists. The staff organizes and holds monthly conferences of neurologists in Sumy, and all teachers organise and hold regional scientific-practical, pathological and anatomical conferences. Together with practising doctors, new methods of treatment and examination are introduced into practical activity.
